Optimization Tests

Items that apparently improve performance, but will need to be tested and quantified before recommending:

  • Server 2012 R2 and above: Switch the XenDesktop video mode from default to Legacy.
    Expected result: Improved login time.
  • All VM session hosts in ESXi: Remove virtual CD-ROM drive.
    Expected result: Improved login time.
  • Citrix User Profile Manager (UPM): Exclude the cookies folder.
    Expected result: Improved login time.
  • All VM session hosts: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Citrix\Logon\DisableStatus (DWORD) = 0x1.
    Expected result: Improved login time.
  • All VM sessions hosts: Disable Network Connection Broker service.
    Expected result: Short Black Screen phase of the login process.
  • All 2012 Server session hosts: Disable the SmartCard service.
    Expected result: Improved login and reconnect time.
  • Win7 Endpoints (including WES): Install Microsoft Hotfix KB2728738.
    Expected result: Improved login time. *The hotfix has been re-released, and can be tweaked with the UseSMBBasedBandwidthAndLatency registry setting.
  • Windows based endpoints: Internet Explorer Options Advanced -> Security we disabled "Check for publisher´s certificate revocation" and "Check for Server Certificate Revocation".
    Expected result: Improved login and reconnect time.
  • Session hosts: Delete key {2c7339cf-2b09-4501-b3f3-f3508c9228ed} from HKCU\software\Microsoft\active setup\installed components.
    Expected result: Improved login time.
  • Session Hosts: Disable App Readiness service.
    Expected result: Improved login time. *Needs more research.
  • XenDesktop 7.6: Install VDA Hotfix 9 (CTX142036).
    Expected result: Improved login time. *CTX Fix #LC0596; doesn't apply to 7.6 FP3 and up.
  • Windows 7/8.1/2012R2: See MS KB https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161390
  • Session hosts with users who have roaming profiles or remote home directories: Group Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > User Profiles. "Set maximum wait time for the network if a user has a roaming user profile or remote home directory" to Enabled with a value of 0 seconds.
    Expected result: Improved Login times (source).
